Williams Engineering Canada (WEC), an industry leader in multidiscipline engineering consulting solutions, and AltaML, an applied artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) product company, both based in Edmonton, AB, announced a partnership to build ML applications in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry.

The two aforementioned organizations have been working closely together for nearly two years on a variety of ML and AI initiatives that will create efficiencies, optimize processes and positively impact the AEC industry as well as other professional service organizations.

As a provider of professional engineering services for over 40 years, WEC believes that developing and infusing AI/ML practices and applying them to common business processes creates efficiencies and advances the AEC industry.

“We’re passionate about designing sustainable infrastructure that contributes positively to the communities that we’re a part of. ML algorithms, when applied to large amounts of data generated by buildings and business processes, will create economic opportunity and transform the AEC industry,” said Naseem Bashir, President and CEO of Williams Engineering Canada.

“Being the first to partner with AltaML to develop AI and ML solutions for the AEC industry is exciting and beneficial not only our organization, but for every organization responsible for designing and building infrastructure across Canada. Machine learning and data analytics will augment our people’s ability to understand and predict the behavior of complex systems, enabling new and innovative solutions to emerge,” he continued. “The ability to leverage data enables companies like WEC to make improved decisions and produce greater efficiencies that lead to creating more sustainable infrastructure for the cities and communities where we all live, work, and play.”

AltaML is a growth-stage company that serves as a bridge between cutting-edge AI/ML research in academia and the realities of application to business. We use a co-development model so that we have partner involvement in identifying promising use cases and to ensure alignment of interests between the parties.

AltaML is built around a world class talent pool in AI/ML at the University of Alberta, the result of decades of investment in AI research. Our cross functional team of ML developers, product managers, software developers, data specialists and business experts are hyper-focused on activating ML to deliver real results that impact the bottom line.

“Digital transformation is a huge opportunity for the AEC industry, including applying machine learning to streamline and augment decision-making. Time saved can then be used more effectively within the organization,” said Cory Janssen, AltaML Co-Founder and Co-CEO. “We’re very excited to be working with a forward-thinking organization like Williams Engineering on new ways to reduce costs and risks.”
